Proposition 65 (California)

What is Prop 65?

Proposition 65 (the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that the State of California recognizes as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The official list of chemicals is maintained by the State and updated regularly.

Why am I seeing a warning on this site?

Some products sold by Oregon (and many other brands in our industry) may expose you to one or more listed chemicals during normal use, handling, maintenance, or installation—for example, through handling metal parts, engine exhaust, or dust created during cutting or grinding. When a product may create exposure above Prop 65’s safety thresholds, a warning must be provided. You might see this warning:

⚠️ WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including [name of chemical], which is known to the State of California to cause cancer [and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm]. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Examples of where exposures can occur

  • Handling metal components or accessories (e.g., parts that may contain lead in brass alloys).

  • Using gasoline-powered equipment and being around engine exhaust (carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts).

  • Creating or breathing dust while cutting, sanding, or grinding (e.g., crystalline silica).

  • Contact with certain plastics, rubber, or coatings that may contain listed phthalates or other chemicals.

These examples are general; not every product contains or exposes you to these chemicals. A Prop 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe—it means we are providing the notice required by California law.

How Oregon provides Prop 65 warnings

  • When applicable, warnings appear on relevant product pages and/or in the shopping cart for shipments to California.

  • Some products also include on-product or packaging labels.

  • If you are buying for use in California and have questions about a specific product, please contact us before purchasing.

Reducing your exposure

  • Always follow the product manual and safety instructions.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, eye/face protection, respirator where needed).

  • Use gas-powered equipment outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.

  • Avoid breathing dust—use dust controls and clean up with a wet method or HEPA vacuum.

  • Wash hands after handling.
